Benchmarks in Minnesota's Historic Preservation

German artist Rudolph Cronau (1855-1939) drew this picture in pen and ink of the Red Pipestone Quarry in Southwestern Minnesota in 1881. In 1937, the U.S. Congress designated the site in Pipestone County as the nation's first national monument.
