The East Terrace Site
Late Archaic/Initial Woodland 1500 BC-AD 400

drawing

Off to the left a group of people stretch their stiff legs and move to join the others. They have been resupplying the group's tool kit with tools made from red chert. They first place each cobble on a larger rock, then hit it with a hammer stone to split it into smaller pieces. Each piece is gradually sharpened into a knife, spear, or other tool.

They ring the hearth and tell stories and jokes as the sun sets and the stars emerge above the pines. The sound of crickets fills the night, competing with the rhythmic noise of grinding stones moving back and forth. The children grind acorns collected earlier in the day.
