The East Terrace Site
Terminal Woodland - The Environment
In the Terminal Woodland period the climate continued its cooling trend, allowing an increase in elm, ironwood, and basswood at the expense of oak. After the cooling trend peaked, the climate warmed slightly and approached modern day temperatures. The Mississippi River and its tributary streams reached their modern levels and began to flow more slowly. The island offshore expanded to its current size because the river had cut to its deepest level.
