African American Stories in Minnesota

African American StoriesThis curriculum kit for third, fourth and fifth graders contains eight stories of African Americans in Minnesota. They range from fur trader George Bonga to Eric Mosley, a recent 10-year-old transplant from Chicago and his new pal Mahamoud Aden Amin, a Somali immigrant. Students read the stories in a booklet that includes illustrations, historical photographs and pictures of artifacts. Then they conduct hands-on activities to learn such methods of historical inquiry as census analysis, object interpretation and map reading. Students learn how to do history, how African Americans have contributed to the building of Minnesota, and how to learn through historical inquiry.
