GENERAL L.F. HUBBARD DIES SUDDENLY;
LEGISLATURE TO ADJOURN FOR FUNERAL
Honored for Gallant Conduct in
Civil War - Was Pioneer News-
paper Publisher.
General Lucius Frederick Hubbard,
for five years governor of Minnesota,
died suddenly late Wednesday at the
home of his son, Charles F. Hubbard,
5019 First avenue S. About 3 p.m. he
complained of not feeling well and
went to his room. Death came at 5:40
p.m.
The funeral services will take place
at St. Mark's Episcopal church Satur-
day at 2:30 p.m. The interment at
Lakewood cemetery will be private.
General Hubbard observed his seven-
ty-seventh birthday anniversary Sun-
day Jan 26. Since that day he had
not been in his usual good health, but
his condition at no time had been con-
sidered alarming.
Both houses of the Minnesota legis-
lature will adjourn, on the day of Gen-
eral Hubbard's funeral, a joint resolu-
tion
to that effect, offered by Repre-
sentative Fred Seebach, having been
adopted today. This action followed a
special message from Governor A. O.
Eberhart, calling attention to General
Hubbard's death. The governor also
directed that the painting of the bat-
tle of Corinth
in the governor's rooms
be draped. The picture shows General
Hubbard leading the charge of Minne-
sota troops.
General Hubbard was one of the most
prominent figures in the development of
the state of Minnesota. As editor,
miller, railroad builder, legislator and
governor he has been a leading citizen
of the state since 1857, when he came
to Minnesota and established the Red
Wing Republican
in Red Wing, Good-
hue county. His services in the civil
war, where he rose from the ranks of
a private in the Fifth Minnesota to the
rank of a brevet brigadier general, are
an important chapter in the state's mil-
itary history.
