Beyond the Sources

Every unit has a corresponding "Beyond the Sources" page. They are found in the Teachers menu under the Student Materials menu icon. The "Beyond the Sources" pages are similar to the Activity questions in that they

will help your students develop skills in working with the unit's source materials.

The "Beyond the Sources" pages are intended to work independently of the Activity questions. Students do not need to work through the Activity questions in order to answer the "Beyond the Sources" questions. The Activity questions, however, are similar to the "Beyond the Sources" questions, and your students may benefit from first trying the Activity questions and checking their answers against the ones provided, then following up with the questions on the "Beyond the Sources" page.

Because the "Beyond the Sources" pages do not rely on the Activity questions, they are flexible enough to be used in a number of ways. You might choose to use them to assess how well your students understand how to work with primary sources. Because the "Beyond the Sources" questions are open-ended, they are also good sources for follow-up discussions after working with a unit.

The BLMname are stored as pdf files. When you select one of them from the Student Materials menu, it will be downloaded to your machine. In order to view the file, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have this application, you can download it free from our Software page found on the About menu. You will also find a link to Adobe on the "Beyond the Sources" menu.

Once you have downloaded the "Beyond the Sources" page that you would like to use, you need to print it and make copies to give to your students. Choosing to print a "Beyond the Sources" page will cause two pages to be printed: a sheet with the questions and blank space for students to record their thoughts, and a "Beyond the Sources" key that has suggested answers to the questions for you to use when assessing your students' work.
