Abolition
When Does a Slave Become Free?

Disagreement in Minnesota over the issue of slavery came to the forefront in August of 1860 when abolitionists helped the slave Eliza Winston escape. Her owner, a Southerner on vacation at the Winslow House in St. Anthony, had brought her with him. Her escape prompted many newspaper editorials on both sides of the issue.
