Judge Information
We would like to invite you to be a judge for History Day. If you have not seen the work done by History Day students, this is your chance to see the kind of work that students present for History Day, and to gain first-hand experience evaluating History Day projects.
As a judge, you will discuss with students a broad variety of topics based on the theme. At the contests, students present their research in one of four categories:
These categories are divided into group and individual entries, with two age divisions: Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12). History Day here in Minnesota has grown from 125 participants in 1988 to over 30,000 this year. This growth is made possible by the joint commitment of the Minnesota Historical Society, the University of Minnesota and History Day volunteers and teachers across the state.
As Minnesota History Day continues to grow, we need more people to volunteer their time as judges at the regional and state levels. Judges evaluate entries based on historical quality as well as effectiveness of presentation. History Day judging is a one-time commitment. It involves four to six hours spent evaluating the result of students’ independent historical research and includes a complete orientation session. Groups of two to three judges consider a series of entries in a particular category and provide positive feedback through oral and written evaluation. The top entries chosen by the judges will pass on to the next level of the History Day program.
