This mystery is about the use of kerosene during the period you were just studying. As you
have learned, the percentage of urban homes with electrical service rose from 35 percent in 1920 to
99 percent in 1960. Likewise, rural homes also received electrical service during this period -
increasing from just 2 percent in 1920 to around 97 percent in 1960. Although at different rates, both urban
and rural homes were replacing their kerosene-burning lamps with electric lights.
