Fort Snelling: A Contentious Ground

Summer Teacher Workshop
July 10-14 or July 24-28, 2006

Fort Snelling: A Contentious Ground is an opportunity for you to learn about Fort Snelling and American territorial expansion in the 19th century. Join other secondary level teachers for five days of hands-on experiential learning in a 2006 National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop for School Teachers presented by the Minnesota Historical Society.

Together we will investigate primary sources and artifacts, and experience characters from the past in the places where they lived, worked and interacted. Participants will learn classroom techniques to examine local implications of key moments in the national narrative of American history.

Workshop Sessions

The workshop will be taught in two different weeks with identical content for each session. Applicants should indicate their session preference on the application form.

  • Session I: July 10-14, 2006.
  • Session II: July 24-28, 2006.

Stipend

Participants selected to participate in the workshop will receive a stipend of $500 that will help defray housing expenses, the cost of meals, books, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Travel

Funding for the travel expenses related to attending this workshop is available. Reimbursements for airfare, ground transportation and local mileage will be made for actual expenses up to $300. Travel reimbursements beyond $300 will be made if there are unspent travel funds available in the program budget at the conclusion of the workshops.

Housing

Workshop participants may choose to be housed in air-conditioned dormitories at Macalester College in Saint Paul. These rooms will have internet access. Weekly rates will be $167.75 for a single; $120 for a double. Availability of single rooms is limited.

Local transportation

Free bus transportation to workshop sites will be available for participants housed at Macalester College.

Academic credit

Participants may enroll for Hamline University Graduate Continuing Studies Credits at $98 per credit. Clock hour certificates and equivalency letters will be presented to all participants.

Eligibility

Full-time and part-time classroom teachers in public, private, parochial, and charter schools, as well as home-schooling parents are eligible to participate in the workshops. Although focused for secondary school history teachers, teachers from other levels and disciplines as well as other school personnel, including administrators, substitute teachers, classroom paraprofessionals, and librarians are encouraged to apply. Consideration will be given to candidates who represent a variety of regional, ethnic, gender, and experiential backgrounds.

Workshop locations

The workshop will be held at Historic Fort Snelling, the Sibley House, the Minnesota History Center and several other historic sites in the Twin Cities. Strategically located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, Fort Snelling offers a unique vantage point from which to examine government and military efforts to extend U.S. influence westward during the nineteenth century.

Application requirements and deadline

Candidates must complete an application cover sheet, commit (in writing) to creating a lesson plan that will be posted to the MHS web site, compose and submit a brief (up to one double-spaced page) essay, résumé and letter of recommendation.
