William Colvill's splint
This splint, made from six pieces of wood, was assembled for Col. William Colvill at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Colvill led the First Minnesota Regiment in its famed charge against a line of Confederates on the second day of the battle. The regiment lost 82 percent of its men in that charge. Colvill was shot twice, and his injuries affected him for the rest of his life.
