Join Dr. Ann McClellan as she guides us through the long history of Sherlock fandom, including the character's endless capacity for adaptation across generations. From the origins of literary fan clubs in the 19th century to the more recent phenomenon of fan fiction, McClellan shows us the dazzling array of ways Sherlock has outlived Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

Dr. Ann McClellan is an internationally known scholar in 20th-century British literature and culture, Sherlock Holmes, and fan studies. She is the author of Sherlock’s World: Fan Fiction and the Reimagining of BBC’s Sherlock (2018), How British Women Writers Transformed the Campus Novel (2012), and numerous articles on cultural topics ranging from servants on screen to social media, fan fiction, and Sherlock Holmes.

This program is offered in conjunction with Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition.
