History Organizations Across Minnesota Receive $4,987,373 in Legacy Amendment Funding

The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) is pleased to announce the newest recipients of 42 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Large Grants ($10,000 and more), totaling $4,987,373 in 23 counties.

Large grants are awarded annually to help nonprofits, educational organizations, government units and federally recognized tribes to preserve and share Minnesota history. This cycle of awards was approved by the Minnesota Historical Society’s Executive Council on October 27, 2022.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Large Grant Recipients
Grants are from fiscal year 2023 Legacy appropriations and are listed in alphabetical order below. Each project will preserve and enhance Minnesota’s cultural and historical resources. All grants are competitive and awarded according to program guidelines and criteria, as well as professional standards.

Armory Arts and Music Center, Duluth, $250,000
To hire qualified professionals to complete partial re roofing on the Duluth Armory, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Cass County, Backus, $42,400
To hire a qualified archaeologist to conduct excavation and documentation of the Munroe Turntable-Roundhouse.

Central Presbyterian Church/Presbyterian Church (USA), St. Paul, $160,000
To hire qualified professionals to complete exterior repairs on the Central Presbyterian Church, listed in
the National Register of Historic Places.

Children’s Dental Services, Duluth, $200,000
To hire qualified professionals to complete roof rehabilitation and exterior work on the former J.C. Schobes Bakery and Confectionery, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

City of Adams, Adams, $31,400
To hire qualified professionals to produce drawings for restoration of the First National Bank of Adams, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

City of Belle Plaine, Belle Plaine, $185,863
To hire qualified professionals to complete a range of rehabilitation work on the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

City of Gaylord, Gaylord, $262,774
To hire qualified professionals to complete restoration on the Oaks Lakeside Pavilion, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

City of Madison, Madison, $286,000
To hire qualified professionals to rehabilitate windows on the City of Madison City Hall and Opera House, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To hire qualified professionals to complete roof repairs on the Maynard State Bank, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To hire qualified professionals to complete plans and prep for the Sandstone Public School Building, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To hire a qualified consultant to complete a context study of all NRHP and eligible properties in the Shakopee Historic District.

To hire a qualified consultant to write an exhibit plan for an accessible online exhibit as a companion to the physical Dakota Ways of Seeing Interpretive Exhibit.

To hire a qualified archaeologist to conduct a survey of the Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum located in Little Falls, MN.

North Star Scouting Memorabilia, North St. Paul, $159,000
To hire qualified technicians to upgrade the Scouting museum’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

Winona County Historical Society, Winona, $106,265
To hire qualified professionals to design construction drawings for the Armory - Winona Commercial Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

About Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants
The Minnesota Historical Society received a legislative appropriation of $33.085 million for the 2022-2023 biennium, including funding for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage (“Legacy”) Grants: $5,892,000 for FY2022 and $7,000,000 for FY2023.

Grants are available for history and historic preservation projects in two funding tiers. Small grants of $10,000 or less are awarded quarterly. Large grants of more than $10,000 are offered once a year. The
next small grant application deadlines are January 13, 2023 and April 14, 2023. All grants are administered through a competitive process using professional standards and criteria.
