Until the great St. Paul winter carnivals of the late 1880s, Minnesotans did not particularly think of frigid weather as a cause for frivolity. The winter sports that so much a part of Minnesota todayice-skating, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobilingevolved from activities that no one found particularly fun or amusing, the simple business of getting around.
