Field Note

Local History Services staff demonstrated Wikipedia editing at the Rooted in Resilience event at the Minnesota History Center, which celebrated 50 years of Hmong Americans in Minnesota with exhibits, storytelling, film, performances, hands-on activities, and Southeast Asian food, honoring community strength and culture. Showcasing how Wikipedia helps educate about Hmong history and culture, attendees learned to contribute and improve entries, supporting accurate representation of the Hmong community.

On the Road: Grants Office Open Houses 
The Grants Office and Local History Services staff are heading to the Anoka County Historical Society to chat about Legacy grants and answer YOUR questions! Open houses are office-hours style, so there will be no presentation and you are welcome to drop in anytime during the time listed below for a short or long chat with one of our specialists. Prospective applicants, current applicants, and grantees are all welcome!

Small Grant Deadline
Applications for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants quarterly small grant round (requests of $20,000 and less) will be due Friday, January 9, 2026. Contact the Grants Office with questions.

DECEMBER Grants Open House (Online)
December 4 - Online: The Grants Office will hold a virtual Grants Office Open House using Google Meet from 2 to 3:30 pm in order to provide additional grants support to our communities. We encourage people to RSVP to Gillian with a short summary of what you want to talk about and she will try to ensure that someone helpful will be available. Learn more »

Grants Office Webinar: 2026 Heritage Partnership Grants can be a Project’s Second Chance
November 20 @ 2 to 3 pm (CT) - Online: Once a year, the Heritage Partnership Grant program helps groups of two or more Minnesota organizations collaborate on history-oriented projects. This webinar will focus on how to repurpose previously unfunded applications for the Partnership program—a strategy that helped several applicants secure funding last year. We'll also cover the process of conceiving and applying for a Heritage Partnership Grant. Presented by Grants Specialist John Fulton.

Ostrander Bell Tower
Do you remember the hours being counted out by the sound of bells on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato? Did you know its source? It was the Ostrander Bell Tower.

The tower was proposed by a campus beautification committee in 1985. According to an editorial in the Free Press in 1987, little thought was given to the beauty of the campus when it was begun. There was no plan for landscaping. The buildings were boxy. The few trees that were planted were donated by a nursery going out of business. In time, architectural items were added, like the water fountain outside the library.

The bell tower was to become a part of an Alumni Plaza, with the tower as “an orientation point and symbol for MSU.” No tuition or state money was to be used in its construction. Bricks were sold to help raise money to be used in the plaza.

Foshay! A New Musical Reading

This new musical reading tells the true story of his rise and fall during the Great Depression. A content update to the Minnesota Digital Newspaper Hub today added 17,662 new issues and 300,480 new newspaper pages. New publicly available titles & date spans:

Historical Society celebrates 65th anniversary
Caledonia Argus - The Houston County Historical Society celebrated 65 years on Nov. 2 and dedicated its history museum. The annual meeting was held in the museum, fittingly surrounded by the very history the Society preserves. Continue reading »

Recently, I perused the History Center, intrigued by its many treasures ranging from an adult mammoth tusk dating back more than 11,800 years to a 7-foot-tall scale replica of the Plummer Building built from 60,000 Lego pieces.
