On Monday, August 24, members of the MNHS Executive, Emeritus, and Honorary councils joined several MNHS staff for a bus trip through southern Minnesota and the Minnesota River Valley. The daylong trip started at the Minnesota History Center and visited the W.W. Mayo House, the Nicollet County History Center, Mankato State University, and Jeffers Petroglyphs, where the councils and MNHS staff learned about projects and programs.
In this photo, the group visited Jeffers Petroglyphs, part of the MNHS historic site network. Jeffers Petroglyphs is home to about 5,000 sacred rock carvings, also called petroglyphs, made by the ancestors of today’s Native Americans.
September 17 & 18 - The Historic Resources Advisory Committee (HRAC) will meet publicly to discuss and determine its funding recommendations for this year's round of large Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage (Legacy) Grants applications. This year's meeting will be held in the 3M Auditorium at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul from 10 am to approximately 4 pm both days. Applicants and the general public are welcome to attend or listen online but are not permitted to participate in the discussion.

The HRAC discusses applications at a public meeting before advancing a list of recommendations to the Minnesota Historical Society Executive Council for final approval. HRAC determines the sequence of discussions during the meeting itself, so exact times for specific projects aren't available ahead of time. The Grants Office staff will not be available to answer questions or assist with technical issues during the meeting or livestream.
Spotlighted State Capital Grants-in-Aid Project: Madison City Hall Windows and Doors Rehabilitation - Firehouse portion
A building assessment identified serious deterioration in the windows, including peeling paint, failing glazing, cracked glass, missing hardware, brittle caulking, and weather-damaged wood. In some locations, rot had weakened frames, sills, and jambs, placing the original windows at risk of eventual replacement. Rehabilitation will stabilize and repair the existing materials, add new glazing putty and weather-stripping, and restore historically appropriate paint finishes. By retaining rather than replacing these character-defining features, the City of Madison is protecting a nationally-recognized historic resource, improving weather resistance and energy efficiency, and helping ensure that this prominent public building continues to serve residents for years to come.

State Capital Grants-in-Aid Program
This grant opportunity supports capital preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, building systems, and accessibility projects at publicly owned historic properties. Sites must be National Register-listed or determined eligible for listing by SHPO, and applicants must provide a 1:1 match. Grants Office Webinar: Heritage Partnership Grants
September 24 @ 2 to 3 pm (CT) - Online: This webinar provides an overview of the Heritage Partnership Grant program, which supports collaborations between two or more Minnesota organizations working toward shared goals related to the state’s history.
Participants will learn how to develop a strong partnership proposal, identify a project’s desired outcomes, and navigate the program’s categories, including Partnership Development and Planning, Shared Resources, and other collaborative approaches. We will explore examples of successful projects and discuss ways partnerships can strengthen organizations’ operational, programmatic, financial, and organizational capacity.
The webinar will also cover the pre-application and application process, offer guidance on repurposing previously unfunded proposals, and explain what to expect when carrying out a funded partnership project. Presented by Grants Specialist John Fulton.

Finding a Soldier in the National Archives
On the evening of August 15, 1944, Pfc Feldkamp was on the deck of LST 282, roughly 200 yards off the coast of Southern France, waiting to disembark on the beachhead. The Allied invasion of Southern France — Operation Dragoon — had been underway since morning.
Then he saw it: “a ball of fire come toward us, looks as though it will go over us but don’t.”
A German radio-guided bomb struck the ship just behind him. Within minutes, LST 282 was burning. He went over the side and swam for shore. Wet, without shoes or a helmet, he wrote that night: “Six from our Btry are dead. We lost everything.”
Pfc Feldkamp served with the 937th Field Artillery Battalion from its activation in September 1942 through deactivation in October 1945 — North Africa, Italy, Southern France, Alsace, and Germany. I’ve spent the past several months pairing some of his words from that service with official documentation, eyewitness accounts, and records from the National Archives to build a fuller picture of what he and his unit experienced. In-Person Safe Storage: Making Boxes + Mounts for Collections

This two-day, hands-on workshop introduces stable and inert materials for collection storage and display, along with the protective and environmental benefits of storage enclosures. Participants will learn basic box-making skills, create a tool-storage box and a custom box and support for an example or personal collection item, and leave with a starter set of box-making tools. The Jeffris Family Foundation assists the preservation of historic sites for nonprofit organizations in small towns and cities in the eight Midwest states (WI, MN, IA, MO, IL, IN, OH, MI) in the range of $5,000 to $50,000 through three funding categories:
The Jeffris Heartland Fund provides matching grants for advanced planning studies for historic preservation projects preparing for a capital campaign and a restoration project.
Capital Campaign Challenge Grants are made to invited projects which have completed their planning and are ready to launch a capital campaign. Unsolicited applications are not accepted. Applicants should submit an Inquiry and will be assigned a Director of the Foundation to help assess the appropriateness of an application well in advance of stated deadlines.
The Foundation occasionally funds special projects and initiatives it finds of interest.

MPR - After five years of planning, the new $40 million Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum opens Saturday at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. The immersive museum aims to tell the stories of Minnesota men and women — and their families — who’ve served and sacrificed for their country over the past 160 years.
