Preserve Minneapolis and Mill City Museum welcome The Current's Andrea Swensson and MNHS Press author Davu Seru to discuss their recent books about the rise of the Minneapolis Sound and the evolution of music in Minneapolis. It’s a flavor and rhythm so unique that it became synonymous with our city in the 1970s and 1980s.

Swensson explores the origins and history of the Minneapolis Sound in her book, “Got to Be Something Here: The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound.” In his recent book, "Sights, Sounds, Soul: The Twin Cities Through the Lens of Charles Chamblis,” Seru highlights the work of Chamblis, whose iconic photography documented the local African American community of the 1970s and 1980s, including the music scene.

A cash bar will be available starting at 6 pm. Copies of the books for signing will be available for purchase. Attendees can also view “Sights Sounds and Soul,” an exhibit of Charles Chamblis's work, in the museum’s central Mill Commons.

This event is presented by Preserve Minneapolis, which promotes and celebrates the city’s historic architectural and cultural resources through advocacy, education, and public engagement.
