St. Paul, MN 55102
The Republican Party has dominated Minnesota politics for much of the state's history. However, today's party looks very different from the progressive Republican Party that had its heyday in the middle of the 20th century and faded into near-obscurity by the 1990s.
Sen. Dave Durenberger grew up in and helped build that party. Join him and longtime political reporter and host Lori Sturdevant for an eyewitness conversation about how Minnesota's GOP shifted away from progressive principles toward the increasingly antigovernment, antitax ideas of the national party, how partisanship has damaged public trust in both parties, and how Minnesota's political past might remedy what ails our democracy today.
This program is being offered in conjunction with the publication of the MNHS Press book When Republicans Were Progressive by Sen. Durenberger and Lori Sturdevant.
Dave Durenberger is a retired three-term US senator and the retired chair of the National Institute of Health Policy. Lori Sturdevant, an editorial writer and columnist for the Star Tribune, has written several books on Minnesota history.
