Each month through March, watch a different thought-provoking film and engage in community discussion afterward around topics in history that resonate today.
In October, view the 2017 film Through the Banks of the Red Cedar, which follows the 50-year legacy of the filmmaker’s father, legendary Vikings wide receiver Gene Washington (College Football Hall of Fame, Big Ten Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award, Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame, 50 Greatest Vikings honoree) from the segregated South to Michigan State University. Washington, alongside highly decorated teammates Bubba Smith (defensive lineman), George Webster (rover back) and Clinton Jones (running back), became members of the first fully integrated football team in America, later making history as first round picks in the 1967 draft.
The film will be followed by a conversation with director Maya Washington.
This film series is a partnership between the Minnesota Historical Society, the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul, and the Capri Theater. This program is made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008.
