Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Morrill Hall takeover at the University of Minnesota with an evening of performance, workshop, and conversation.
In January 1969, black students at the University of Minnesota staged a 24-hour protest at Morrill Hall, the school’s administrative building. The demonstration led to the creation of the university’s Afro-American Studies Department.
5 pm: Performance by the MNHS Teen Action Group on the history of Morrill Hall
5:30-6:30 pm: Writing workshop with local poet and artist Keno Evol, exploring themes of students fighting for representation
7 pm: Panel discussion on the ongoing legacy of Morrill Hall and continued importance of ethnic studies in schools, featuring past and present students and staff from the department
