Although slavery was primarily a Southern institution, dozens of slaveholders purchased land in Minnesota and invested in local businesses. This provided a financial foundation for growing new communities with profits flowing back to the South.

In this History Lounge, join MNHS Press Christopher Lehman, author of Slavery's Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State, to explore the lesser-known history of how Southern slaveholder wealth intertwined with Minnesota's early development and helped build the North Star State.
