Have a drink with friends while learning about Minnesota history in the intimate setting of the Sibley Historic Site. A new topic will be offered on the second Friday of each month, May-November.
In June, join author Sheila O'Connor for a discussion based on her book Evidence of V: A Novel in Fragments, Facts, and Fictions.
O'Connor will present on the little-known practice of incarcerating adolescent girls for "immorality" in the first half of the 20th century. Based on research into her maternal grandmother, O'Connor tells the story of V, a talented 15-year-old singer in 1930s Minneapolis who aspires to be a star but is sentenced to six years at the Minnesota Home School for Girls in Sauk Centre for an unplanned pregnancy. O'Connor blends fact and fiction in this story that remains pressingly relevant to girls and women today.
Sheila O'Connor is the author of six novels including her most recent book, Evidence of V: A Novel in Fragments, Facts and Fictions, published by Rose Metal Press. She is a professor of creative writing at Hamline University.
Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the presentation begins at 6 pm. Light food and one drink ticket will be provided with each paid admission for ages 21 and up.
