Photographer biography: Katie Mumm
Katie has a love for the North Shore area of Minnesota and the breathtaking scenery of the Boundary Waters, as well as a deep respect for the animals that live there. She is most happy when she is outdoors. Her art offers a uniquely female perspective in a predominantly male profession.
Katie’s passion for photography began as a little girl, when she would take her camera outside in her yard and capture pictures of flowers and leaves and whatever else piqued her interest.
She moved to the Gunflint Trail full time in January 2017 and began capturing pictures of the wildlife around her as well as the beauty of the BWCAW. Her first photo of a moose was the culmination of countless hours of driving up and down the backroads looking for the elusive animal. Once she got the shot, she was hooked!
Katie’s biggest thrill comes from photographing a wild animal doing what it would be doing if she wasn’t there. She believes that photography can be both a fine art and a powerful way to raise awareness of not only the beauty of animals but also of their intrinsic worth. She draws inspiration from the rare beauty of the Gunflint Trail and the opportunity of living near the shores of Lake Superior.
