The MNHS public programs team engages and educates the public through a variety of program formats including tours, lectures, performances, artist talks, and film screenings. The intern will work with MNHS public programs staff on a variety of programs for general audiences in various stages of planning and implementation. Projects this summer may include programs related to MNHS’ 175th anniversary, the Minnesota State Fair, St. Paul walking tours, and our long-running lecture series History Forum.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to research, write, and communicate clearly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Familiarity with museum education/interpretation or willingness to learn
  • Flexibility, problem-solving skills, and ability to adapt to change
  • Curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed
Student Responsibilities
  • Assist in the delivery of public programs
  • Provide logistical support during the planning of programs
  • Help develop future programs and conduct research to support them
  • Interact with the public in a public setting
  • Serve diverse audiences interacting with MNHS programs
  • Help collect evaluation data for public programs
  • Help identify future areas of growth in public programming
Knowledge Intern is expected to gain
  • Hands-on experience with the daily work of planning and implementing public programs at a large public history institution
  • Familiarity with full timeline of a public program, from initial idea to completion
  • Understanding of how public programs complement and support the broader mission and work of MNHS, including research, exhibits, site interpretation, education, publishing, and community engagement
