Take a guided tour of the historic Washburn A Mill to discover the dramatic story of work and labor in Minneapolis from the 19th century to today. Hear how workers improved their lives in the mills and related industries and some of the ways management responded including by creating anti-union policies and groups like Citizens' Alliance. Explore how labor was divided across race, class, and gender lines and the role of organized labor today. Learn about the 1903 flour milling strike, the Truckers' Strike of 1934, and the life and career of Nellie Stone Johnson, a union organizer and the first African American elected to citywide office in Minneapolis. This tour includes about 1 mile of moderately paced walking indoors on uneven surfaces. Please call ahead to make arrangements for guests with accessibility needs.
