About This Event

Step into the haunting world of Romanian folklore with Romanian Dark Legends: Monsters, Vampires & the Undead. This presentation uncovers spine-chilling stories rooted in centuries of myth and mystery—from bloodthirsty creatures of the Carpathians to ghostly spirits and restless souls. Discover how Romanian tales of the undead influenced modern horror and vampire lore, including the origins of Vlad Țepeș (aka Dracula), superstitions surrounding strigoi and moroi, and rituals used to protect villages from the dark forces beyond. Join us to hear Raluca Octav blend historical context, storytelling, and cultural insights into how these legends shaped regional identity and continue to fuel global fascination. Whether you're a fan of folklore, fantasy, or the eerie unknown, this session offers an unforgettable journey into the shadowed corners of Romanian tradition. Come curious. Leave haunted.

Raluca Octav is a founder and former president of the Heritage Organization of Romanian Americans in MN (HORA). She is currently the Director of the HORA of Romanian-American Cultural Center located in the Landmark Center in St. Paul, MN. Before leaving Romania, Raluca was a museum senior curator and director in the South Transylvanian fortress of Fagaras. She immigrated to the United States in 1991, part of the wave of immigration following the anticommunist revolutions in Eastern Europe.
