Belonging & Inclusion at MNHS

What are we trying to accomplish?

In our mission to create powerful engagement with history, there are communities and perspectives our organization has harmed or excluded. The purpose of our work is to intentionally and proactively embrace these communities and perspectives in order to foster a sense of belonging, meet constituents where they are, and elevate underrepresented voices from the past.

The success process listed in 4 relating steps with MNHS logo in the center.

What does success look like?

We encourage diverse participation in, stewardship of, and shared responsibility for our collective history

  • MNHS constituents, partners, stakeholders, and team members feel a deep sense of belonging as Minnesotans.
  • The breadth and depth of the historical knowledge MNHS draws from, contributes to, and shares includes increasingly diverse stories, non-traditional expertise, and previously hidden histories.

We build and repair relationships with people we have harmed or excluded as constituents, partners, stakeholders, and team members

  • MNHS constituents, partners, stakeholders, and team members feel a deep sense of belonging when they engage with MNHS.
  • MNHS is recognized and sought after as a model for how legacy organizations can identify, dismantle, and rise above their own embedded systems of oppression.

We understand and meet the needs of all communities, particularly those we have harmed or excluded

  • MNHS continuously listens, adapts, and evolves in response to the needs of our constituents, partners, stakeholders, and team members.
  • MNHS is recognized and sought after as a champion, demonstrated ally, resource, and partner in actively building a more inclusive, empathetic, and informed workforce and society.

We attract and uplift people of diverse identities, perspectives, ways of knowing, and ways of being

  • MNHS attracts and retains more people of diverse identities, perspectives, ways of knowing, and ways of being as employees, members, partners, and donors.
  • The MNHS workforce demonstrates and reports high levels of engagement, motivation, job satisfaction, belonging, and wellbeing.
