In his own words, Perseverance: A Memoir details Mark Dayton’s life story, including his childhood in a dysfunctional household, his political awakening, his early life in politics, and his friendship with Senator Paul Wellstone, whose call, “We all do better when we all do better,” served as a lodestar for Dayton’s ongoing work.
The book ends with a postscript on our current moment in public life. In addition to providing an enduring record of recent political history, Dayton’s memoir offers case studies of problems being remedied swiftly under leadership motivated by empathy. Perseverance provides occasion for conversations of consequence and substance, today and for years to come.
Mark Dayton served two terms as the fortieth governor of Minnesota, from 2011 to 2019. His other elected offices include state auditor and US senator.
