Join us for an MNHS Press book launch and exhibit opening for Walking My Ancestors’ Path: A Collection of Paintings and Stories by Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik, a compilation commemorating animal spirits ranging from bees to rainbow trout, from hummingbirds to wolves, and illuminated with the vibrant flora and vivid hues of Minnesota’s beloved northland.
Arranged seasonally, these paintings in Zimmerman’s distinctive style evoke characteristic North Shore scenes, capture skyscape and landscapes, and highlight creatures whose spirits have connected with his own.
The accompanying stories, many retold in Ojibwemowin by Manidoo Ma’iingan, reflect on points of inspiration, emotional resonances, and everyday events in the artist’s life.
Doors open at 6 pm. Artist talk at 7 pm. Book will be for sale in the museum store and the artist will be available to sign copies.
The companion exhibit, Walking My Ancestors’ Path: The Art and Stories of Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik, will be on display in Mill City Museum’s Mill Commons through March 28, 2027, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours.
This event is free and open to the public and registration is not required, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP. Tickets are not required for admission.
Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik, a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, lives in Duluth, Minnesota. Manidoo Ma’iingan is an educator and language specialist living in Minnesota.
