By 1995, one gay American in nine had been diagnosed with AIDS and one in 15 had died – a decimation of the generation of gay men born between 1951 and 1970. Minnesota’s AIDS generation are now senior citizens, but thousands did not survive. This is a painful chapter in our state’s history, but also a hopeful story of a besieged community’s resilience. Award-winning writer Brian Malloy will examine the era’s moralization and politicization of the disease and provide a personal history of how gay men and their allies came together to save lives in the face of a largely indifferent and hostile nation.
Speaker Bio:
Brian Malloy is the author of novels The Year of Ice (St. Martin's Press), Brendan Wolf (St. Martin's Press), After Francesco (Kensington), and the young adult novel Twelve Long Months (Scholastic). His novels have been a 2002 New York Times New and Notable title, an Oprah Daily pick for best of 2022, a 2021 Women's National Book Association Great Group Reads selection, and a 2009 Book Sense Pick.
