North Star Voices: Rooted in the North

Join us for North Star Voices, a Thursday evening series that brings Minnesota’s remarkable people, places, and stories to life in a relaxed, social setting. Grab a drink, connect with fellow history and culture enthusiasts, and settle in for an engaging conversation about the people and ideas that have shaped our state.

In January, environmental journalist and author Mark Neuzil will explore the writers whose words helped generations of readers see, understand, and cherish Minnesota’s diverse natural landscapes. Drawing from his latest book, Rooted in the North, Neuzil will share the stories of influential voices who captured the beauty and significance of the state’s northwoods, tallgrass prairies, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Along the way, he’ll introduce us to conservationists and storytellers including Sigurd F. Olson, Florence Page Jaques, Helen Hoover, Charles Eastman, Maude Kegg, Gary Paulsen, and others whose writing shaped our understanding of Minnesota’s landscapes, wildlife, and environmental heritage.

The evening will feature Mark Neuzil in conversation with David Hakensen, followed by audience Q&A and a book signing. Copies of Rooted in the North will be available for purchase. Tickets are pay-what-you-will, with a suggested contribution of $10.

North Star Voices takes place in the Education Wing on Thursday evenings, offering an opportunity to enjoy history, conversation, and community in a casual “history happy hour” atmosphere. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with a cash bar on site.

Mark Neuzil is a journalist and professor emeritus at the University of St. Thomas. He is the author or coauthor of several books, including Views on the Mississippi: The Photographs of Henry Peter Bosse and Canoes: A Natural History in North America, both published by the University of Minnesota Press.
