About This Event

Join us for North Star Voices, a Thursday evening series that brings Minnesota’s remarkable people, places, and stories to life in a relaxed, social setting. Grab a drink, connect with fellow history and culture enthusiasts, and settle in for an engaging conversation about the people and ideas that have shaped our state.

In March, uncover the surprising history behind one of St. Paul's most ambitious civic projects—and the profound impact it had on the people who called the neighborhood home.

Historian Ethan Osten brings to life the dramatic story behind The Capitol Approach, tracing how architect Cass Gilbert's vision for a grand parkway leading to the Minnesota State Capitol evolved over six decades into a massive urban renewal project that displaced as many as 20,000 St. Paul residents. Through compelling archival discoveries and vivid storytelling, Osten explores the lasting consequences of visionary planning, political ambition, and the human cost of reshaping a city.

The program is in partnership with MNHS Press and will feature a presentation by Ethan Osten, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Copies of The Capitol Approach will be available for purchase. Tickets are pay-what-you-will, with a suggested contribution of $10.

North Star Voices takes place in the Education Wing on Thursday evenings, offering an opportunity to enjoy history, conversation, and community in a casual “history happy hour” atmosphere. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with a cash bar on site.
