Summit Avenue Walking Tour

Take a 90-minute walking tour of the Summit Avenue neighborhood, named one of America's "Great Streets" in 2008. The tours highlight the Gilded-Age mansions that line the elite avenue and the people who owned them and built them.

Guides will talk about the architecture, social history and current preservation issues of the historic neighborhood.

The tour covers 1.5 miles. All areas are handicapped accessible, but some side streets are cobblestone and have historic stone curbs.

F. Scott Fitzgerald Walking Tour

Investigate the transformation of Lowertown, St. Paul's hardest-working neighborhood, from sleazy river port to bustling rail hub and industrial center, and from failing urban enclave to thriving urban village. Explore architectural gems like Union Depot and the Pioneer-Endicott and uncover tales of the magnates, thieves, and dreamers who built the Capital City's hippest neighborhood.

This tour includes two hours of moderately paced walking on uneven terrain.

Nooks & Crannies Tour

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the back staircases, dust chutes, silver vault, and more on this tour of the Hill House. Visitors will see the top-floor attic with original theater, take the back stairs to the basement, view storage areas not on the regular tour, and take a peek inside the gatehouse overlooking Summit Avenue.

Guides will also discuss the technological innovations present in the house at the time of its construction in the late 19th century, and the difficulties of preserving such a building today.

Tours run 90 minutes and leave every half hour between 5 pm and 7:30 pm.

Discover St. Paul's often overlooked lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer past on this tour curated by Stewart Van Cleve, author of "Land of 10,000 Loves: A History of Queer Minnesota."

Walk in the footsteps of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and Oscar Wilde; stand on the site of the city's earliest known gay bar; find out where two transgender pioneers made history simply by seeing a movie and which building has housed seven queer bars and a bathhouse annex since 1977.
