Precious and Adored Book Club: Riverview Library
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
1 E George St., St. Paul, Minnesota, 55107
About This Event
The Minnesota History Center is showcasing a number of unique items from the MNHS collections in an exhibit titled The Stories We Keep. This exhibit features 25 objects from MNHS collections—a rich trove built on the generosity and foresight of thousands of people who have entrusted MNHS with their belongings and their stories.
To celebrate the exhibit, the Minnesota History Center has partnered with the Saint Paul Public Library to host a book club featuring Precious and Adored by Lizzie Ehrenhalt and Tilly Laskey. Precious and Adored highlights the correspondence between Rose Cleveland, sister of President Grover Cleveland, and Evangeline Simpson, a wealthy widow who would become the second wife of Henry Whipple, Minnesota's Episcopal bishop. The women corresponded across states and continents, discussing their advocacy and humanitarian work - and demonstrating their sexual attraction, romance, and partnership.
Join us at Riverview Library on February 9 for the book club and learn more about this portrayal of nineteenth-century LGBTQ history, then visit The Stories We Keep to see original letters from the MNHS collections.
Participation in this book club includes a copy of the book and two free passes to the Minnesota History Center to see the exhibit. This book club is for adults. Registration through Saint Paul Public Library at https://sppl.bibliocommons.com/events/68dad88435bac40b5cab57e4.
Support for this program has been provided by the Marney and Conley Brooks Fund.
