About This Event
Enjoy a theatrical reading of Nina! Madam to a Saintly City, a play informed by the life of Nina Clifford, the Canadian-born madam who ran the most influential house of ill repute in Minnesota from 1889 to 1929. In celebration of Nina's penchant for champagne, guests can also enjoy a glass of bubbly and refreshments in the sophisticated setting of the Gilded Age James J. Hill House.
Nina! Madam to a Saintly City is one of many plays written by Lance S. Belville, and preserved in his papers within MNHS Collections. Belville and his wife (director, producer, actor) Lynn Lohr, founded the award-winning History Theatre in Saint Paul in 1978.
Lohr herself will direct and join a diverse cast of talented readers, including Saint Paul’s Jim Cunningham, to bring Nina’s story to life for an evening of history, folklore, and frivolity.
