About This Event

Learn how early hunters created arrowheads for their spears or arrows by observing a flintknapper demonstrate the craft. Xoloti Bembe Ek (Alex Ek) will offer a close up look at the process of creating stone projectile points and discuss their use. After the demonstration, try your own hand at knapping!

Xoloti Bembe Ek (Alex Ek) is of Yucatec Maya descent, and his work is rooted in carrying forward a tradition that long predates me. For over 12 years, he has practiced flint knapping—not just as a skill, but as a living connection to Indigenous knowledge, survival, and craftsmanship. His background in geology and Indigenous cultures shapes how he understands the stone, the process, and the story behind every piece.

He has taught students across Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska, sharing both the technique and the cultural meaning behind the craft. Becoming a cultural instructor stands as one of his greatest accomplishments—not because of the title, but because it allows him to preserve, represent, and pass on something that matters.
