About This Event
In our newest coffee chat, visitors will dive into the history of Emancipation Day celebrations through the lens of the 25th Infantry Regimental Band, which was stationed at Fort Snelling from 1882-1888.
Black communities have celebrated emancipation on many different dates. Throughout the 1880s-90s, the 25th Infantry Band participated in many Emancipation Celebrations across Minnesota and the surrounding territories. The Band's varied experiences highlight a paradox of Black musicians in the Army: the performance of "traditional" American music in support of a settler ideology that often excluded Black Americans that also gave the musicians the access and opportunity to help build community and collective memory among Black audiences.
