Chronology
1925
After several years of experimentation, Richard Drew invents a line of masking tape designed to seal well but release cleanly. The product is marketed as Scotch-brand masking tape.
1930
Drew and 3M release Scotch-brand cellulose (later cellophane) tape.
1939
The famous snail style cellophane tape dispenser is released.
1945
The product line adopts the Scotch Tape tartan logo.
1961
3M releases Scotch-brand Magic tape. Unlike previous cellophane tapes it has a matte finish, can be written on with pen or pencil, and resists yellowing as it ages.
