Chronology
March 29, 1998
A tornado more than a mile wide, strikes the town of St. Peter, the Nicollet County seat. It uproots thousands of trees and destroys or damages some 600 homes. One young boy is killed.
March 30, 1998
The National Weather Service rates the massive storm an F3 on a scale of one to five. The first community meeting convenes to begin the rebuilding process.
March 31, 1998
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sets up an office in St. Peter to begin assessing the damage.
April 2, 1998
President Bill Clinton declares Nicollet County a federal disaster area.
April 6, 1998
Elementary students return to school for half-day sessions.
April 7, 1998
Power is restored to nearly 90 percent of the town.
April 19, 1998
Gustavus Adolphus College reopens.
