Scandinavia (Worcester, Mass.) 1887-1918 Browse the title
Scandinavia (also titled Skandinavia), published in Worcester, Massachusetts between 1887 and 1918, was the major Swedish language newspaper in New England during those years. It covered politics and news for a major Swedish American community on the East Coast with a clear industrial profile. The weekly published its first issue on August 21, 1886 under the title Worcester veckoblad, with Erik Knutson as publisher and civil engineer J. Forstedt as editor. The newspaper was a success from the start.
With the November 18, 1887 issue, Worcester veckoblad's title was changed to Scandinavia. The first full-time editor of this paper was Gustaf Hamberg, followed by Wilhelm Hallander, who remained in that position until 1899. Beginning with the April 19, 1889 issue the spelling of the paper's title was changed to Skandinavia. In 1890 Knutson organized the Swedish Publishing Company, which took over publication of the newspaper. Knutson died in 1904 and Skandinavia went through a series of owners. In 1918 the paper was bought by Svea, also of Worcester, and the two merged, retaining the Svea title.

Scandinavia (även kallad Skandinavia) gavs ut i Worcester i Massachusetts mellan 1887 och 1918 och var den stora svenskspråkiga tidningen i New England under dessa år. Den innehöll artiklar om politik och nyheter för en stor svensk-amerikansk koloni på östkusten, med en tydlig industriell profil. Det första numret av veckotidningen gavs ut den 21 augusti 1886 under namnet Worcester veckoblad, med Erik Knutson som utgivare och civilingenjören J. Forstedt som redaktör. Tidningen var framgångsrik från första början.
I och med numret som gavs ut 18 november 1887 bytte Worcester veckoblad namn till Scandinavia. Tidningens första heltidsredaktör var Gustaf Hamberg, följd av Wilhelm Hallander, som fortsatte som redaktör till 1899. Från och med det nummer som gavs ut 19 april 1889 ändrades stavningen av tidningens namn till Skandinavia. 1890 bildade Knutson Swedish Publishing Company, som övertog utgivningen av tidningen. Knutson dog 1904 och Skandinavia fick ett flertal olika ägare. 1918 köptes tidningen upp av Svea, också från Worcester, och de två tidningarna slogs ihop och behöll namnet Svea.
