Volunteer during “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution on view at the History Center from Oct. 9, 2004, to May 8, 2005. The exhibit explores the power, glory and challenges of the American presidency – the office, the men who occupied it and their dynamic relationships with the public – with more than 300 artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution and the Society.
There are three volunteer opportunities from which to choose:
1. Museum Store Assistant*
Assist patrons by bagging merchandise, restocking shelves, helping with crowd control and providing light security. Must be friendly, outgoing and enjoy working with families and children. Regular shifts available Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Student volunteers welcome. Volunteers can attend either the Oct. 2 or Oct. 5, training session.
2. History Forum Assistant*
Greet, register and usher visitors attending “The History Forum,” a series of six ticketed lectures related to the exhibit. Must be outgoing, assertive and able to think on your feet. Lecture shifts will be Saturdays, 1 to 4 p.m. Volunteers must attend the Saturday, Oct. 2, training session.
3. Theater Program Assistant*
Greet, register and usher students grade 6 through 12 attending “Making History with the President,” a series of 10 interactive theater performances. Must be outgoing, assertive and comfortable with adolescents. Each shift is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Volunteers must commit to at least two dates and attend the Tuesday, Oct. 5, training session.
