Recent State Archives Acquisitions: February 2014

Background Information

A variety of research topics are reflected in records added this month to the State Archives collection.  The Health Department transferred venereal disease reports (dated 1940-1970), including monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports documenting occurrences of syphilis, gonorrhea and chancroids from across the state.  The statistical information is divided by sex, age, race, county, city, marital status,  reporting agency, and other categories. No individual names are listed.  The records nicely complement other records of the Disease Preservation and Control Division, and will be useful for public health research topics.

Transportation Department staff transferred some particularly old and fragile bridge survey reports (dated  1914-1917, 1938, 1947) for 24 bridges located throughout the state.  Two of the bridges depicted, located in Redwood County, have historical significance and are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, because of their association with the State Road system and their innovative architectural design.  Information includes bridge number and location, a map showing course of the waterway   crossed, name of waterway, location of existing and proposed roads, and recommended change of channel.  Also, cross section drawings of the waterway on the center line of the proposed bridge, the present and proposed grades of roadways, and related details.  The records complement other bridge-related records (photographs, plans, reports, subject and research files) dating back to 1905 preserved in the State Archives.  The records are useful for research concerning historic preservation, bridge design, and local history.

Received from Rice County are tax lists (dated 1980-1981, 1990-1991) of the Auditor which continue the set dating from 1860, and available on microfilm.  Also, an 1877 tax list for Walcott Township, which inter-files with the microfilmed set of tax lists.  Assessment rolls (dated 1990-1991) of the Assessor, which continue the set dating from 1860, and available on microfilm.  Clerk’s books (dated 1925-1934) for Common School District No. 57/1800 (Wells Township) which pre-date the school district’s set of clerk’s books already preserved in the State Archives.  All of these records are particularly valuable for family and local history research.
