Minnesota State Archives

Recent State Archives Acquisitions: June 2013

Background Information

Government records added this month to the State Archives collection document key functions and activities, and continue existing record sets preserved in the collection.

A former Hennepin County employee, and MHS member, donated published records and reports, including annual reports and histories (dated 1909-2011) of the departments of Community Corrections (later known as the Community Corrections and Rehabilitation Department), and Court Services;  the Probation Office; and the Veterans Court.  Hennepin County established Minnesota’s first Veterans Court in 2010, and a Veterans Court report entitled “First Year in Review” (dated 2011), discusses the history, design, function, and early findings of the court’s first year of operation.  From the Probation Office, a Journal of Probationers [register], dated 1899-1909, documents information such as date, court number, remarks, and probationer’s name, age, birthplace, residence, and offense.  The probation function is not well documented in the State Archives collection and this record book and published reports are a welcome addition to document this aspect of the criminal justice system.

The Human Services Department transferred Commissioner’ Bulletins, dated 2009-2010 (bulk dated 2009), concerning statutes, regulations, and operating procedures that affected services and programs administered by the department and the counties, particularly those involving administrative services, finances, personnel, information systems, and various aid programs, especially those dealing with children, disabled, aged, mentally ill, and chemically dependent.  These records continue an existing set of Commissioner’s Bulletins dating from 1937.

Land resurvey field notes and plats (dated 2011-2013) for property in Township 144 North, Range 38 West, were transferred and continue the existing series of Secretary of State land survey field notes and plats dating from 1856.
