Minnesota State Archives

Recent State Archives Acquisitions: June 2011

Background Information

Records transferred this month to the State Archives are valuable for a variety of research topics.

Received from Clay County are assessment rolls (dated 1970-1971) and tax lists (dated 1872-1901, 1910-1911, 1920-1921, 1930-1931, 1940-1941, 1950, 1960-1961, 1971). Assessment rolls and tax lists are important source of information on land values, farmsteads, distribution of wealth, and types of property possessed by individuals, families, and corporations. They are useful to family historians searching for details about their ancestors' personal lives and belongings, and they are extremely valuable gold mine for social and economic historians doing community-based studies. For more information about these types of government records, see the 1994 article "Going to the Sources" published in Minnesota History.

The Crow Wing County District Court transferred criminal case files, dated 1884-1967, which are particularly useful for family history research.

Received from the Finance Commissioner's office, are correspondence and selected subject files (dated 2000-2004) of former Commissioners Pamela Wheelock and Dan McElroy. Some of the subject files concern the Governor Ventura trade missions to China in 2001 and 2002, the Commission on Reform and Efficiency, the state and local goverment budget, and state agency performance indicators.

Also useful for genealogical research are plaintiff and defendant indexes (dated 1883-1985), registers of civil action (1883-1952) and criminal action (1883-1951), and index to criminal cases (1883-1951) transferred by the Grant County District Court. The indexes and registers wil greatly enhance access to the civil and criminal case files already preserved in the State Archives.

Assessment rolls and tax lists (dated 1873-1901. 1910-1911-1920-1921, 1930-1931,1940-1941, 1950-1951, 1960-1961, 1970-1971, 1980-1981) were transferred by Murray County.

Finally, with more information about Minnesota land, a land re-survey plat and field notes (dated 2009) were added to a set of land re-survey field notes and plats dated from 1910 to the near present preserved in the State Archives; these are records of the Secretary of State.
