Recent State Archives Acquisitions: June 2009
Background Information
Records added this month to the State Archives collection significantly enhance the collection, and contribute to fulfilling collecting priorities of the State Archives.
Campaign finance files and related records of the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board continue existing records in the collection, fulfilling a goal to document the state legislature. These records are often used to examine campaign finances over a period of time.
Valuable for family history, are court records received from the Chisago County District Court, many of which will enhance the use of related records already preserved in the State Archives.
Records received from the Nursing Board, Public Safety Department, and Ramsey County also continue existing records in the collection, and will be useful for several types of research.
This month’s most significant acquisition are land survey records transferred by the Secretary of State. The acquisition includes land re-survey field notes (dated 1856-2007, bulk dated 1910s-1990s) that complement the land survey field notes preserved in the State Archives collection since 1992.
Included in the acquisition are two significant maps. One map, dated 1848, depicts the military post site of what later became the Camp Ripley Military Reservation; the future military reservation was surveyed by Lieutenants Derby and Williamson, and the map was approved by President Zachary Taylor. The second map, dated 1858, shows the North Shore area that apparently became the Grand Portage Indian Reservation; the map was done by George H. Cannon, U.S. Deputy Surveyor.
Also included in the transfer are two Bibles that were apparently used to administer the oath of office to the surveyors who conducted the public land surveys in Minnesota.
