The Minnesota Historical Society preserves and makes available a wide range of materials chronicling Minnesota's history and culture. The goals of the Collections Department are to collect and preserve; provide access and interpretation; and engage in education and outreach. This blog is a tool to share these stories and let people know what is happening in the department.
Post office sorting shelves
Hooray for the post office!
This rough pine box has twelve dividers that create variously sized open mail slots. The box was made by Auguste Larpenteur, deputy postmaster of Saint Paul, and was used by postmaster Henry Jackson. The box stood on a counter in Jackson's general store in Saint Paul during the 1840s. The box was donated by Jackson's wife Angeline in 1859.
