ST. PAUL, Minn. (June 5, 2025) – The Minnesota Historical Society seeks applications for small and large grant requests from the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants program to preserve and enhance access to the state’s historical and cultural resources and support projects of enduring value to history and historic preservation statewide.

The Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants program —also known as Legacy Grants —is a competitive process created to provide financial support for projects focused on preserving Minnesota’s history and culture. The application submission deadline for small grants is July 11. Additional rounds of small legacy grants have application deadlines of October 10; January 9, 2026; and April 10, 2026.

There is also an upcoming mandatory pre-application submission deadline for large grants on July 18. The final application deadline is Friday, September 12. Large grant applications are accepted once per year.

Eligible applicants must reside in the state of Minnesota and be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, state/local government unit, federally-recognized Tribe, or educational institution. Additional information about preservation and grants is available on the MNHS website. First-time applicants are encouraged to carefully review application requirements and instructions and to contact MNHS Heritage Preservation Staff with any questions.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on Nov. 4, 2008. The Legacy Amendment supports efforts to preserve Minnesota land, water, and legacy, including Minnesota history and cultural heritage.
