TWO HARBORS, Minn. (March 3, 2026) – This spring, a project at Split Rock Lighthouse will help protect the historic structure against the harsh conditions on Lake Superior’s shores.
Humidity creates challenging conditions for historic preservation. For that reason, crews will install a new system that monitors moisture inside the building. Sensors will collect real-time data to maintain lower humidity levels.
Additional work includes replacing damaged masonry to ensure that the iconic lighthouse remains able to welcome visitors for generations to come.
Work on the lighthouse will begin in March with an anticipated completion date of late June. During this time, scaffolding will cover the lighthouse as crews complete restoration work. The site’s Trails and Landscape restoration project, which began last year, will also be completed during this time period.
In March and April, access to historic buildings will only be available through the purchase of a Hard Hat Tour ticket. Starting in May, guests can access historic buildings during regular site hours with the purchase of regular site admission. Daily access to historic structures is subject to change.
Updates on restoration progress will be provided on Split Rock Lighthouse’s website and Facebook.
This project is made possible by the people of Minnesota through an appropriation made by the Minnesota State Legislature and approved by the Governor.
