PINE CITY, Minn. (December 18, 2025) – A popular wintertime tradition will return this January! The Snake River Fur Post will host its annual Winter Frolic on January 24. Families, history buffs, and anybody looking to shake off the winter blues can take part in a variety of traditional games and enjoy greater access to the historic site.

The public is invited to try their hand at tossing curling stones and playing a round of Ojibwe snow snakes. Historic reenactors from La Compagnie des Hivernants de la Riviere Saint Pierre will be onsite to add to the immersive experience. There will also be opportunities to explore the Fur Post and go snowshoeing on the trail system.

In addition to these activities, visitors can learn about how local Ojibwe, fur traders, and voyageurs experienced winter weather without modern technologies. Experience how 19th century Minnesotans traveled during the snowy months, and learn how the fur trade shaped the region.

Guests who need a break from the cold can warm up around outdoor fires or in the visitor center with a cup of hot cocoa and some indoor games and activities.
