Joy Baker
Joy's volunteering story started back in 2018 when she first moved to the twin cities. Joy originally started volunteering at MNHS; because she wanted to be able to occupy some time with a productive task during her retirement. So she filled out the application and started volunteering at Fort Snelling primarily within the School Program. She spent a few years there before she decided that she wanted to branch out and try new places. Since then Joy has volunteered at several of our locations such as Mill city, Ramsey house, and the History Center. Joy has even joined the Women's Organization here at MNHS. The organization has programs and events curated to teach and stimulate interest in Minnesota's history.
Being able to learn the history of the state she lives in has been an enriching experience.
Joy’s favorite thing about volunteering has been the people she has met and worked alongside. Being able to meet people from all walks of life has been the highlight of her experience. She has made connections with people she might not have met before and is excited to meet new people every time she volunteers whether it be guests or fellow volunteers. Through volunteering, Joy has learned that if you don't know something, be quick to ask for help. She says people are far kinder than we give them credit for and are always willing to help.
You see, Joy Baker is the personification of her name. She embodies the type of person we should all strive to be. Someone who appreciates the differences in others and embraces it with a willingness to learn.
