BUILDING AND HOUSE HISTORY
Photographs
The Minnesota Historical Society photograph collection includes individual building exteriors and interiors, as well as street scenes and broader landscapes.
Search the Visual Resources Database by town name, street name, or individual address. Street names and addresses are useful for searches for properties in the Twin Cities. Town name is the best way to find photos of greater Minnesota.
The Library has a card file address index for properties in Minneapolis and St. Paul to help you if your property does not appear on the Visual Resources Database.
Additional property photos can be found in the State Archives collections. They include 1960s project photos of the St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and building assessment files in the records of the St. Paul Valuations Department.
For portraits of property owners and building occupants, search the Visual Resources Database by the person's name. Portraits also may be found in other Society collections: engravings in books, photographs in manuscript collections, illustrations in atlases, and photographs of government officials in the State Archives.
