This page describes the process and parameters to submit a film to the
"Moving Pictures - Shared Stories of Minnesota's Greatest Generation" film project.
PROCESS - Information & Inspiration in 5 Simple Steps
1. Register
We will alert you to opportunities and resources via an e-newsletter. Registration is your way of letting us know that you are interested. There is no registration fee and no obligation to ultimately submit a completed work. Your information will not be shared with outside groups.
The sooner you register, the more opportunities and resources you will have available.
Why register:
- After you register, we'll send you an application packet. Completion of the application packet is required prior to submitting your film for award consideration.
- Registering enables us to better determine your interests and needs. It also allows us to better understand the kind of support we can offer as you produce your film.
- It reserves your seat at the film festival.
2. Collaborate. Assemble Your Team
Team up with family, friends and neighbors. The process of producing a short film can be a challenge, but one made easier when taken on as a team. You may have a great story to tell but no technical skills, or you may have the skills but no story. Everyone can have a role: researcher, writer, director, camera operator, or editor.
The process of producing the short film can be as rewarding as the actual product. We want to hear about this process. It can be inspiring for others.
If you need direction in getting started, let us know. We can help!
3. Stay inspired and informed
Take advantage of special offerings. Something inspired you to take that first step and register your interest with us. Perhaps it was a personal story you wanted to explore further. The power of these stories is what powers the Minnesota's Greatest Generation Project.
Sign up for our e-newsletter for updates, stories, and a calendar of film project events. We will share with you stories of Minnesota's Greatest Generation, stories of other filmmakers collaborating in their communities, and opportunities to meet, greet and learn.
There are many groups and organizations across the state ready to offer their assistance.
4. Share your story
Submit your film by September 19, 2008. The first step in submitting your film is to register. All film submissions must be less than 10 minutes in length on DVD and accompanied by the following information:
- Release and Agreement
The Minnesota Historical Society retains limited usage rights usage to all films submitted. - Process Report
Description of your film and your work to complete it
5. Join us at the October Awards
Share your story in style at the Moving Pictures Film Festival. See the work of other filmmakers as we screen the entries and present $10,000 in awards to the best films in five categories.
PARAMETERS - A focus on those who lived through it all.
The "Moving Pictures - Shared Stories of Minnesota's Greatest Generation" film Project explores the generation that grew up in the 1920s and 1930s, came of age during World War II, and participated in the postwar boom that followed in the wake of the war. The Greatest Generation Project explores how events at home and abroad affected their lives and created a legacy shared by all Minnesotans.
Our Focus
- Stories about Minnesotans born between 1910 and 1929.
- We think of 'Minnesotans' as anyone born here or anyone who lived or worked here at some point in their lives.
- Any aspect of the life and legacy of this generation (individual or group) can be explored.
- While the 'main character(s)' in the film is a member of the Greatest Generation, you are encouraged to put their lives in a context of where they lived and worked (e.g. Iron Range, Red River Valley, farms, factories, Fort Snelling.)
- The 'main character' can be a family member, friend or other member of the Greatest Generation who is living or deceased.
The Rules
- The film competition and festival will be held annually in the fall of 2006, 2007, and 2008.
- The awards are open to all ages and abilities.
- All films will be less than 10 minutes long and will be submitted on DVD.
- The Minnesota Historical Society retains limited usage rights usage to all submissions.
- Creativity is encouraged; variations in style and format are welcomed.
